Emergency 75 and Rescue 78 responded to an early morning motor vehicle crash at Maplecrest and I-469. Two vehicles were traveling North bound on Maplecrest Road and as they approached I-469 one vehicle left the road, went airborne and flipped numerous times. The driver sustained multiple injuries and was transported to Parkview Trauma Center by TRAA. Rescue 78 crew assisted the Allen County Fatal Accident Crash Team (F.A.C.T.) with the investigation.
St Joseph Township Fire Department, Huntertown Fire Department and Northeast Fire (Cedar Canyons Station) along with the Fort Wayne Fire Department Special Operations Rescue Team (S.O.R.T.) participated in a joint training involving trench rescue. Irving Gravel Company dug a trench at their Coldwater Road site which allowed our units to practice this life saving skill.
Speed was to blame for this single vehicle crash that sent four teenagers to the hospital. The driver stated he was driving too fast when he tried to turn from Notestine on to St Joe Road at this T intersection. The Ford Mustang hit a utility pole, spun around and came to rest on another pole and tree. The boys were able to climb out and met the ambulance crew on the road upon their arrival. The crash is under investigation by the Allen County Police Department.
SJTFD responded to assist Northeast Fire and EMS on a reported Barn fire early this morning. Fire 71 and 73 were first on the scene to find a barn fully involved with exposure problems. Engine 142 arrived and layed a 5'' line up the driveway. Engine 71 set up to draft from dump tanks. A North Tanker Response was requested by Fire 71 while enroute as a large glow was visible from 3-4 miles away. Approx 64,000 gallons of water was used to extinguish the fire and only the siding of an exposure building was damaged. Cause was determined to be a child playing with a candle earlier in the evening. Fire was reported at 0018 and all units cleared by 0430.
Engine 71 along with Fire 71 responded as a R.I.T. response to assist Huntertown Fire Department and Northeast Fire on an attached garage fire this afternoon. Fire damage was limited to the garage but the entire home sustained smoke damage. The occupant who was in the home at the time of the fire was transported to a local hospital with smoke inhalation. The origin of the fire was determined to be accidental.
Water Rescue was held on July 22, 2009 at the River Bend Bluffs Pool. Everyone had a cool / refreshing time with this training
